The choice between belonging and speaking honestly is one no one should have to make. I help leaders build cultures where they don't.

Introduction

The Invitation. The Welcome. The Belonging.

The journey from keynote to deeper engagement moves through three connected stages. Each one invites people closer to the thinking behind G’Ology and The Five Bs of Human Connection, from hearing the story, to exploring the framework, to practising it together.

THE STORY

That is a question I have spent much of my life trying to answer.

My journey has taken me through very different worlds. I spent part of my childhood fostered in rural Kent before later moving to inner-city London. My childhood also included experiences of physical abuse. Later, my life took me to Nigeria, where I encountered a very different cultural environment and, for a period, experienced homelessness.

My working life has been just as varied. I have been a welder, a chicken farmer, a magician’s personal assistant, a bodyguard and, later, a police officer with London’s Metropolitan Police Service.

Each of those environments came with different expectations, hierarchies and unwritten rules. I learned how to adapt, read a room and work out where I fitted. For a long time, belonging felt conditional.

In 2004, while serving in the Metropolitan Police Service, I came out as gay and became the first openly gay Black police officer in the organisation. That was another important part of a much wider journey of understanding identity, authenticity and what it can cost when we feel we have to hide or reshape parts of ourselves in order to belong.

All of these experiences shaped the way I came to understand people and human connection. They taught me that we all bring our histories, assumptions, fears, hopes and experiences into every room we enter, and that the quality of our relationships is often shaped by how conscious we are of what we bring with us.

That journey now sits at the heart of my work through G’Ology and The Five Bs of Human Connection.

I am not interested in telling people what to think. I am interested in helping people become more conscious of how we meet one another, especially when we see or experience the world differently.

Because better cultures are not created by getting everyone to think the same. They are created by becoming more aware of how we connect when we don’t.

The Framework

The Five B's of Human Connection

Connection is built through what we create before an interaction, how we stand beside people, what we protect behind them, and the boundary expressed by Never Belittle. Belonging is the foundation on which every connection is built.

Before

Creating the atmosphere of safety

Shape environments where people feel respected; set expectations of fairness, dignity and curiosity; create spaces where questions and ideas are welcomed.

Beside

Supporting without taking over

Stand beside others so their voice can be heard; amplify perspectives without replacing them; offer reassurance when someone takes a risk; listen with curiosity rather than assumption.

Behind

Protecting dignity in absence

Challenge misrepresentation when it appears; address bias when someone is not present; reinforce fairness in how people are discussed; protect the integrity of another person's contribution.

Never Belittle

The boundary of dignity

Challenge ideas without diminishing people; do not undermine someone's credibility in their absence; protect the dignity of every person in the space.

Belonging

Culture of inclusion - the foundation

Make people feel seen, heard, valued and included; welcome and value diverse backgrounds and perspectives; create acceptance and unity; ensure people entering the space feel they belong.
